2001: Apple Releases Itunes

itunes_logoApple had purchased the rights to soundJam MP software which is what itunes is based on. At first itunes was only supported on the Mac operating system and its function was as a media player and media management tool. Itunes allowed users to record music from CD’s, bring it into itunes, mix it together with other songs and burn a custom CD. The music distribution industry saw a massive transformation when the itunes music store was launched in 2003. After a week of it being launched, over a million songs were downloaded and by 2013 over 25 billion songs had been downloaded.
