1959-Electronic Recording Machine

UNIVACAccounts are posted manually and then an increase in check writing after World War 2 occurs. The ERMA project digitizes checking by creating a computer readable font. A special scanner reads account numbers pre-printed on checks using magnetic ink character recognition. ERMA can process the same amount in an hour that normally takes a well trained banker seventeen days.
